Trailer Reveal: 'Take Two' by Laurelin Paige

Book Title: Take Two
Author: Laurelin Paige
Release DateFebruary 4, 2014
Publisher: Samhain Publishing

Summary:

He’s ready for his close up, but she’s the one calling the shots.

On the night of her graduation from film school, straight-laced Maddie Bauers fell completely out of character for an oh-my-god make-out session with a perfect stranger. Complete with the big O.

Seven years later, that romantic interlude is still fresh in her mind. That stranger is now a rich and famous actor. And she’s one very distracted camera assistant working on his latest production. She might consider another tryst…if he even remembers her.

Micah Preston does indeed remember Maddie. Too bad he’s sworn off Hollywood relationships. He allows himself as much sex as he likes—and oh, he does like—but anything more is asking for trouble. For the woman, not for him. Yet knowing Maddie could want more than a movie-set fling doesn’t stop him from pursuing her like a moth drawn to hot stage lights.

But as the shoot nears its end, it’s decision time. Is it time to call, “Cut!” on their affair, or is there enough material for a sequel?

Warning: Contains a dreamy movie star hero, a focus-pulling heroine, off-the-charts instant chemistry, steamy sex in near-public locations, and a new use for lip gloss.

About Laurelin:

Carnelian by B. Kristin McMichael
(Chalcedony Chronicles #1)
Publication date:
January 10th 2014
Genres: Time-Travel, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Everyone has a past, but for most it isn’t so far in the past as Seth Sangre. His past is literally from thousands of years ago. Seth’s past led him to the present seeking something that might help him save his country from destruction. He has been in the present for over three years now and just found exactly what he has been looking for.

Mari had dreams of college being a fresh start, one where she would start over and not fall for the good looking player like high school. Unfortunately for her that’s exactly what ends up falling into her lap on the first day she moves into the dorms. Now she has to hold to her promise to herself and not fall for the handsome Seth. But he doesn’t plan to make it easy for her. Seth has already marked her as his next conquest. As the semester progresses, Mari learns that Seth might just have a past of his own that’s literally in the past. Suddenly Mari finds her future along with her past put into question. She’s connected to Seth far more than she ever wanted to be and maybe the player isn’t who she thought he was. If Mari can trust her heart enough to follow him, Seth will lead Mari on an adventure of a lifetime and reveal family secrets she never knew existed.

AUTHOR BIO:

Originally from Wisconsin, B. Kristin currently resides in Ohio with her husband, two small children, and three cats. When not doing the mom thing of chasing kids, baking cookies, and playing outside, she is using her PhD in biology as a scientist. In her free time she is currently hard at work on multiple novels. Every day is a new writing adventure. She is a fan of all YA/NA fantasy and science fiction.

Excerpt:

After Mari and Seth decide to be friends, Seth still hints at wanting more:

“I know for some reason you wont believe me, but Im completely serious about you, Mari,” Seth began. “If my only way into your life at this point is as your friend, then thats what Ill be, but just know that what I really want is more than that. Ive been searching for years for you.”

“You dont even know me,” I retorted, trying my best to move the conversation to something else.

“I know all I need to know about you. You are the girl Ive been searching for. Now I just need to convince you that maybe, just maybe, Im the guy for you.” Seth grinned like he was accepting the challenge. “Just know that Im not giving up on you.” And before I could reply, he leaned down and kissed my forehead before turning and strolling away, leaving me speechless before the open doorway.

I marched into my room and slammed the door. Seth Sangre was good. I could still feel the tingles from where he had kissed me. Heck, I could still feel his hands around my waist as he caught me from falling. He was such a puzzle to me now. Hed been nothing but a gentleman all night. In fact, he only kissed me on the forehead when I was standing there shocked, even though he could have kissed me on the lips. I probably wouldnt have even pushed him away if he had tried. He was a riddle to me, filled with secrets, yet when he said he would protect me, I knew he was telling the truth. Most players Id known in high school would never go that far for a girl, even just to impress them. Seth was turning out to not be the person I thought he was, but even so, there was no way to be sure. If I said yes and went out with him, and he turned out to just be the normal, player jerk, Id be the one with a broken heart.

Review: 'One Tiny Lie' by K.A. Tucker

One Tiny Lie by K. A. Tucker
(Ten Tiny Breaths #2)
Publisher: Atria Books
Publication Date: June, 11 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Buy Links: Paperback | Kindle | Nook

Synopsis:

Livie has always been the stable one of the two Cleary sisters, handling her parents' tragic death and Kacey's self-destructive phase with strength and maturity. But underneath that exterior is a little girl hanging onto the last words her father ever spoke to her. “Make me proud,” he had said. She promised she would...and she’s done her best over the past seven years with every choice, with every word, with every action.

Livie walks into Princeton with a solid plan, and she’s dead set on delivering on it: Rock her classes, set herself up for medical school, and meet a good, respectable guy that she’s going to someday marry. What isn’t part of her plan are Jell-O shots, a lovable, party animal roommate she can’t say ‘no’ to, and Ashton, the gorgeous captain of the men’s rowing team. Definitely him. He’s an arrogant ass who makes Livie’s usually non-existent temper flare and everything she doesn’t want in a guy. Worse, he’s best friends and roommates with Connor, who happens to fits Livie’s criteria perfectly. So why does she keep thinking about Ashton?

As Livie finds herself facing mediocre grades, career aspirations she no longer thinks she can handle, and feelings for Ashton that she shouldn’t have, she’s forced to let go of her last promise to her father and, with it, the only identity that she knows.

My Review:

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved Ten Tiny Breaths and couldn't wait to read this book. I loved the character of Livie and was excited for her to have her own book. I was most definitely not disappointed. There is just something about Tucker's writing in both of these books (Ten Tiny Breaths and One Tiny Lie) that just sucks you in right from the beginning. Her stories are great escapism, yet somehow manage to also ring true. I couldn't get enough of this book and I can't wait to read the third book. This is the second book in the series, but I feel like you could probably read it as a standalone novel, though it wouldn't hurt to read the first book to understand Livie a bit better.

This novel tells the story of Livie, the sister of Kacey who is the main character from the first book. Livie is younger than Kacey and has always been the mature one, while Kacey went through a bit of a crazy, out of control phase. She has always been a bit of an old soul ever since her parents' death. She is about to start college at her dream school and has everything figured out. She does everything right; no drinking, no partying, no sleeping around. She knows exactly who she wants to be and what she wants to do with her life. That is until one night when she finally gives in and goes out for a night of partying. She blacks out on Jello shots (why do they have to be so delicious and deadly?) and ends up with two new guys in her life: Ashton and Connor. They are best friends and completely different. Connor is exactly the type of guy she should be with; dependable, smart, and solid. Ashton on the other hand is a bit of a man-whore and tends to live a less serious life. Livie wants to fall for Connor, but she can't seem to stop thinking about Ashton. She senses a darkness in him and is pulled to him by a force she cannot understand, while he keeps trying to push her away claiming he's no good for her.

I must say I absolutely love Ashton. I always have a tendency to fall for the bad boy and this book was no exception. He's everything I want in a male lead: hot, tortured by his past, and trying to do what he believes to be the right thing at the cost of his own happiness. I couldn't get enough of Ashton and Livie together. They are so perfect for each other in a weird way. I also love that their story isn't one of insta-love. Nothing pisses me off more than insta-love in a book. They both had to grow to truly love one another and they fought for each other.

K.A. Tucker reminds me a little bit of Katie McGarry (whom I ADORE) as far as excellent writing & pacing and their amazing love stories. To me K.A. Tucker is the Katie McGarry of the new adult genre and if you know my taste or read my reviews you know that might be the best compliment I can give an author. K.A. Tucker has that special something in her writing that is incredibly difficult to put into words, but keeps the reader enthralled and begging for more. I tend to get a little sick of contemporary romances after a while. If I read too many they start to all run together and become very boring, but the Ten Tiny Breaths series is a category all its own. These books stand apart from the pack of bazillions of contemporary romances that seem to be coming out in droves these days.

This book, along with Ten Tiny Breaths, are must reads. Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. The characters and the story are both fabulous. I was rooting for both Livie and Ashton the whole time. Livie pissed me off from time to time, but I love her still. And the story is beautiful and real. I adore Tucker's writing style and she paces her stories perfectly. It's easy to take pacing in writing for granted, but it's writers like Tucker who remind me exactly why it's so important. I gave this book four and a half out of five stars only because I loved the first book so much and it's impossible not to compare the two. This book stands on its own and is incredible, but I'm not sure I will ever love one of these books quite as much as the first one. The bottom line is: read this book; you will not be disappointed.

Review: 'Crash Into You' by Katie McGarry

Crash Into You by Katie McGarry
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Publication Date: November 26, 2013
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary Romance
Rating: 5/5 Stars

Synopsis:

From acclaimed author Katie McGarry comes an explosive new tale of a good girl with a reckless streak, a street-smart guy with nothing to lose, and a romance forged in the fast lane

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

My Review:

This book is technically the third in the 'Pushing the Limits' series, but all of the books in the series are standalone books. Katie McGarry takes a smaller character from the previous book and gives them their own love story. I was especially excited for this one because the male lead, Isaiah, had been a small character in the first two books (2 of my all time favorite books by the way) and he was always one of my favorite characters. I couldn't wait for him to get his happy ending and, as expected, McGarry didn't disappoint.

This book is about Isaiah and Rachel. Isaiah is close friends with the two leads from the first two books. He's been dealt a hard hand in life. He's lived in the system his whole life with his mother in prison. He fell in love with his best friend Beth and was brutally rebuffed by her. He is closed off to the world except for his best friend Noah and his main goal is to turn 18 and make a life for himself. He is careful not to let anything or anyone distract him. Rachel comes from a perfect looking family and tries hard to be the perfect daughter, sister, and student. Her mother had her later in life because her first daughter had died and Rachel tries very hard to live up to the shadow cast by her dead sister. Rachel also has a panic disorder which results in terrible panic attacks. The one thing she and Isaiah have in common is their love of cars and that love of cars brings them together one fateful night.

I have loved all of McGarry's books and I think 'Pushing the Limits' will always be my favorite because I read it first, but this is the one I could relate to the most. I too have been diagnosed with panic disorder and can relate to Rachel on a very real level. Panic attacks are one of the WORST things a person can experience and Katie McGarry nailed it as far as they feel and what goes on inside your head when they happen. It was really nice to read a character I could relate to on such a personal level and in a way it made me feel not so alone in the world.

I honestly believe Katie McGarry is the master of dual points of view. I have read a lot of books with dual points of view; some terrible, some so-so, and some really great, but McGarry's are on a whole other level. She does such a great job of keeping both voices unique and deciding what should be told in each voice. I am floored again and again by her ability to write the teenaged male voice. I think she must have been a boy in a past life. She does it so flawlessly and honestly while not making me hate the guy. All of her books have been written in dual points of view and I hope they will all continue to be.

This book had a lot of car talk in it and I didn't find myself bored by it once. This is saying something coming from me. I know NOTHING about cars and care even less about them, yet this book kept me enthralled throughout. Rachel's and Isaiah's love was on the front burner of this book and I couldn't get enough of them even if it happened to revolve a lot around cars. Just like all of McGarry's books this one is a must read. It sits with the first two in my all time favorite books list. This book is a really quick read; both beautifully written and perfectly paced. Crash Into You just reiterates my lifetime obsession with Katie McGarry and her books, and I absolutely CANNOT wait to read her next book, and the one after that and the one after that and the one after that...

Synopsis:

“There would be no happy ending for us. He was too damaged. I was too broken.”

Two years ago, Lorrie’s mother was murdered. But that wasn’t the end of it. Reeling from the tragedy, Lorrie’s father spiraled into alcohol, depression, and finally suicide.

The two most important people in Lorrie’s life are both gone but she’s still alive.

Trying to recover from the tragedy, Lorrie returns to campus, ready to pick up the pieces of her life. All Lorrie wants is to get back to “normal.”

Then she meets Hunter. The man, the legend, “the Hammer.”

Hunter is a cage fighter who takes on every fight like he’s got nothing to lose. His life is a tangled mess of girls, booze, and fist fights. And while it may seem like he’s got a devil-may-care attitude, he’s fighting a private cage-match with a monster he can’t defeat.

Lorrie knows that Hunter is the exact type of guy she should stay away from, especially in her fragile state, but Hunter has other ideas.

As Hunter and Lorrie grow closer together, will they be able to overcome their pain and heal each other? Or will they both end up wrecked?

WRECKED
RESCUED (WRECKED BOOK TWO: Coming Early 2014)

Review:

I knew from the very first pages that I was starting a book that was going to mess with my emotions, possibly even leave me with an ugly cry. Seriously, the book actually starts like this:

There would be no happy ending for us. He was too damaged. I was too broken. Things between us shouldn’t have gone this far I the first place. Then this never would’ve happened. If only I’d been stronger. If only I hadn’t said those words, if only we were different people—not the lost, scared and broken people that we were…then we wouldn’t be in this wreck.

I mean, I was asking for it, right? VERY. FIRST. PAGE. And oh yeah, I started it at one in the morning….

Lorrie is a college sophomore. She is just making her way back to school after taking a year and a half off to deal with personal tragedies. Unfortunately her small, private college is a hotbed of gossip and she finds herself the topic of many whispered conversations around campus. She finds it hard to get close to anyone and keeps everyone except for her best friend and suite-mate Daniela at arm’s length. When a series of random events has her crossing paths with Hunter “the hammer” Jensen, she must decide if she is ready to pursue a relationship with a new friend, and perhaps even more.

Hunter is a college senior who pays his tuition by fighting in MMA cage matches. He’s good. Really good, and there’s not a girl on campus that wouldn’t like to get a piece of him…unless of course they already have, and there were certainly plenty who have had a taste of Hunter. But when Hunter meets Lorrie, he soon finds she’s nothing like any of the other girls he has ever met, much less dated. Can he convince Lorrie to give him a chance at friendship? Or do his own secrets keep him just as unlikely to pursue a healthy relationship?

This is the first book I have read that has an MMA/fighter storyline, so I have no basis to compare it to, other than other NA and contemporary romances I have read. That said, I loved this book. Ms. West has created characters that are really, truly broken and the burgeoning relationship between Lorrie and Hunter is painful, at best. It seems truly doomed from the start, however we are given characters with such depth that you can’t help but root for them and a happy ending. I loved the characters and I loved the heat of the relationship between the two, it was certainly steamy!

My biggest complaint with Wrecked however, is that it ends in a cliffhanger, and a pretty major one at that. I generally try to steer clear of series books that I can’t pick up the next one right away. What can I say, I’m impatient! But, if you’re willing to hold out for the next book in the series,Rescuedwhen it comes out early this year, I say GO FOR IT! (Or if you don’t mind cliffhangers!) It is an excellent, well written, fast, easy read that I stayed up all night reading for. Wrecked is a four and a half star read, and I’m only taking off the half of a star for the cliffhanger. I’ll be checking my email regularly for updates of the next books release!

Excerpt:
The bell rang as Katie slowly made her way to the locker room. She reached forward to grab the door handle when someone grabbed her from behind and lifted her up. A squeak of surprise escaped her lips, but no other sound came out. A hand covered her mouth. Really? Katie thought. Again? He’s going to pay for it this time. She struggled against her attacker, but his grip was too strong. He lifted her like she weighed no more than a doll. He carried her toward the gymnastic storage area and stepped over the mats until they were in the far back corner, covered in shadow.

Wes set her down but refused to take his hand of her mouth. Katie clawed and scratched at his hand and arm and attempted to kick him. Wes calmly grabbed her wrists with his free hand and pressed his body against hers so she couldn’t attack him anymore. Her face turned red and anger boiled through her veins. She screamed even though his hand was still over her mouth.

“Katie, please, calm down. I’m not going to hurt you.”

In response, she struggled against his body—a futile attempt since he was so much stronger than she was.

Wes opened his mouth to speak again, but the words never came out. Instead, a familiar, “Again?” echoed through the storage space, and Wes was pulled away from Katie. Josh had him by the back of the collar and threw him onto a pile of mats. Katie took deep breaths and moved away from the wall to get a better view.

“Why can’t you take a hint, Wes? The lady doesn’t want anything to do with you.”

Wes got to his feet and brought his fists up, ready to fight. The space was big enough that there was a few feet between the two boys, but if things escalated, Katie would be caught in the middle of the battle.

“Yeah, well, she wouldn’t want you if she knew what you really were.”

Josh threw his head back and laughed. “And what is that, Wes? A nice, clean cut boy who actually pays attention to her and wants to be around her?”

Wes’s eyes narrowed to slits. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Josh clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth. “I’m afraid I don’t. I think you may be delusional.”

Katie had her back pressed against the wall and slowly slid her way to the opening so she could run into the gym and get help. Josh was doing a great job of staying between her and Wes.

“Don’t listen to him, Katie. He’s only using you to get to me.”

Katie glanced over Josh’s shoulder. Wes had taken his eyes off his opponent for a second and stared at her, a pleading look in his eyes. Typical, she thought. Wes always thought things were about him. Someone needed to let him know the world didn’t revolve around him. She tore her gaze from his and continued toward the exit. Wes sensed her intention and moved so he blocked the opening. He was within an arm’s length of Josh.

Josh shook his head. “C’mon, Wes. That’s not very nice. If Katie wants to leave, you should allow her to leave.”

“No. I’m not letting you do this to her.”

Josh laughed. “Do what? Show her how a real boyfriend is supposed to treat her?”

Katie stopped for a second and glanced at Josh. Did he just say what she thought he said? Boyfriend? Could it really be true? Was that how he viewed their thing? Katie wasn’t exactly sure what was going on, but she was going to rethink it the next time she got the chance. If the situation hadn’t been so dire, she would have let the inner smile play across her lips.

Wes’s face crunched in anger, his fists balled at his sides. Without another word, he lunged forward. Wes and Josh fell to the ground, right at Katie’s feet. Wes sat on Josh’s chest and slammed his fist into the side of Josh’s head. Katie screamed.

“Stop it! Wes! Leave him alone!”

She wanted to jump between the two to make him stop, but she was afraid of getting hit. The pupils in Wes’s eyes were dilated, completely blocking out the brown that was normally there. Rage shrouded his face. Fear squeezed Katie’s chest. She’d never seen him act like that before. She continued her trek toward the opening. If she couldn’t stop him, Ms. Bode would have to.

Wes brought his fist up by his shoulder to smash into Josh’s face again. As he brought it down, Josh grabbed it and stopped him. Katie stopped and watched the two of them. Josh stared at Wes, a smile curling his lips. Blood stained Josh’s teeth.

“That all you got?” With a growl and movement almost too fast for Katie to see, Josh pushed Wes.

Wes sailed across the room, through the opening, and slammed into the wall several yards away. Katie’s jaw fell open. What just happened? No one was that strong. Josh got to his feet and wiped the blood from his nose with the back of his hand. He stared at Wes, who sat on the floor, his head hanging on his chest.

Josh reached his right hand behind him, toward Katie. “C’mon. He won’t bother you for a while.”

Katie hesitated taking the offered hand. Her chest heaved with ragged breaths, her head swam with confusion. How did Josh throw Wes like that?

Josh looked over his shoulder at her. “You’re not going to get another chance. Are you coming or what?”

Katie shook herself out of her daze and grabbed Josh’s hand. The pair stepped over the mats and through the opening. They stopped in front of Wes. He looked up at them, his eyes taking a moment to focus. Katie glanced into the gym. Why wasn’t anyone else coming to help them? Surely they heard the fight, her screaming.

The door to the girl’s locker room opened in slow motion. Two of her classmates walked out, but their movement wasn’t normal. They, too, were stuck in slow motion.

“Hey!” she called to them and tried to run up to them, but Josh had a tight grip on her hand and wouldn’t let go.

“They can’t do anything to help you,” Josh said softly. “They don’t even know what’s happening.”

Katie’s breath caught in her throat. She turned back to Josh, eyes wide. “What is happening?” The words barely made it out of her mouth. Josh smiled.

“Let her go. I’m the one you want,” Wes croaked from the floor.

Josh knelt down in front of him, inadvertently pulling Katie closer since he wouldn’t let go of her hand. “You know I’m not going to do that. Besides, you never know how useful she’s actually going to be.”

Wes attempted to lunge for Josh, but his balance was off and he fell to one side. Josh laughed. Katie stared down the hall at the two girls as they headed to class. She reached for them, hoping they’d sense her desperation and turn around. Josh jerked on her hand, pulling her into his body. Her back was against his chest, and he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. His breath tickled her ear lobe.

“Take one last look, Katie. It might be the last time you see him.”

Katie stared down at Wes. He struggled to get to his feet. Pain pinched his face, along with something else. For a moment, Katie thought it looked like sadness. He reached for her. Involuntarily, she reached for him too. Then, the world was shrouded in blackness.
