Giveaway Saturday: 'The Sea of Tranquility' by Katja Millay

I've decided Saturdays are now Giveaway Saturdays on Book Cracker Caroline. I will be posting a giveaway every Saturday. My first Giveaway Saturday giveaway is a kindle copy of 'The Sea of Tranquility' by Katja Millay because it is one of my favorite reads so far this year. You can read my review here

I live in a world without magic or miracles. A place where there are no clairvoyants or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman boys to save you. A place where people die and music disintegrates and things suck. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk.

Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.

Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances.

Review of Jennifer L. Armentrout's 'Pure'

*This is a review of Pure, the second book in the Covenant series. I am including the synopsis of the first book in the series, Half-Blood, in case you have yet to read it.*

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi pure bloods have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals--well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.

There is need. And then there is Fate...
Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn't exactly awesome--especially when Alexandria's "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth's in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom--so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do--and sacrifice--for her.
When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies--lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn't blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her.
When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone.

My Review:

I received an ARC of Pure through Arcycle in exchange for an honest review.

I want to start out by saying that although I am a fan of book series' I have been avoiding series' in general because I have such a ridiculously large to be read pile. I have read a lot of good things about Jennifer L. Armentrout and when I saw this book up for grabs I thought 'Eh, what the hell? It's the second in the series so I'll give it a shot'. I went ahead and got the first book from the library and was absolutely hooked from the very beginning. This series sucked me in and still has me in its clutches. I read the first three books in four days, have a hold on the fourth one at the library, and am eagerly awaiting the release of the fifth and final book. This second book is when things start to get REALLY crazy.

This book picks up pretty much right where the first one left off. Alex has killed her daimon turned mother, knows she's going to awaken as the second apollyon (a half-blood who can compel and harness the four elements plus the fifth and final element, akasha), and is continuing her training in the hopes of becoming a sentinel (a daimon hunter). After having been held captive by the daimons and learning about their plans to turn half-bloods in order to infiltrate the covenants, Alex is called to the New York covenant in order to tell what she knows to the council. While in New York she grows closer to Seth (the first apollyon and her 'other half'), learns first hand why she and Aiden (her pure love interest) must deny their feelings for one another, and quickly realizes she has many enemies that view her as a threat that must be dealt with by either forcing her into drug-induced servitude or by simply killing her.

This book marks a turning point for Alex. By visiting the New York covenant she gets a better look at just how dangerous her world really is. She is forced to grow up rather quickly and learns that her lack of impulse control could not only hurt her, but also those she loves. She also learns that the covenant that she has called home for most of her life, North Carolina, is quite a bit different from the other covenants. In New York the half-bloods are openly discriminated against and the New York council, who have the most power, are sneaky and brutal. I loved witnessing Alex grow so much in this book without losing herself in the process.

As sad as I was that Alex and Aiden spent the majority of this book avoiding one another, I have to admit I kind of learned to love Seth a bit more. This is the first time we really get to see the larger than life apollyon as a vulnerable, real human being. He grew on me throughout this book and I found myself rooting for Alex to choose him by the end of it. I still had a place in my heart for Aiden, but the impossibility of their relationship was really made clear.

I think one of the reasons I love these books so much is how real Alex is in them. She is a badass with incredible strength and ability, but her dialogue and thoughts are so realistic. She talks and responds to things exactly the way a regular teenage girl with a good sense of humor would. I felt totally connected with her and could easily put myself in her shoes, feeling what she feels. Armentrout has a remarkable way with her characters. They can drive you nuts, but you ultimately love and root for them all.

Pure is an action-packed rollercoaster of a book. It sucked me in and kept me riveted until the very end. The writing is fantastic and the dialogue is perfect. I had no intention of continuing this series, but I am completely addicted now. Alex's world is introduced to us in the first book, but after reading this second book it's clear that it only scratched the surface of the hematoi (descendants of the gods and demi-gods) world. Pure delves into the nasty politics and the seedy underbelly of the hematoi. This book, along with the series as a whole, is a definite must read for lovers of tough female leads, detailed fantasy worlds, and impossible romances.

Excerpt:

The book flew open and a gust of wind whipped my curls around my face. The pages riffled back and forth before coming to a halt, open at the first page. This was getting a little weird. I was about to slam the book shut when words began to appear of their own volition, right before our eyes.

“Um, Elliot. Can you see that? Or am I as crazy as Dad?”

“I can see it,” he whispered.

Immagica, the place where anything is possible, but not always controllable.
Enter at your own risk.

“What a load of crap,” I said, picking the book up. The new line of text flickered gold and pulsed, on then off, then on again, like a flashing, neon sign. I gingerly picked up the corner of the page and peeked under it to the next, but it was blank.

“How do we enter?” Elliot asked, leaning into me and staring at the book.

“Why do you keep asking me all these questions? You’re here, you know as much as I do.”

“You’re older, and always acting so much smarter than me,” Elliot said. I poked my tongue out. “That’s real mature.” He rolled his eyes.

“Oh, so you’re Mr Maturity now you’re a teenager.”

“Sometimes I’m more mature than you!”

While we argued, we were oblivious to what was happening. The book riffled its pages again, and another gust of wind hit our faces. Before we knew what was happening, the golden glow exploded from the book and sucked us in. That’s the best way I can describe it. One minute we were in my room, surrounded by my grandmother’s elegant interior decorating, and the next we were enveloped with gold light.

At first I felt Elliot beside me, but then he was gone. The light was warm, like a soft, fuzzy blanket. Then the ground hit me in the face. It was hard and rough. The force of my landing knocked the wind out of me, and I tumbled over myself before coming to a halt on my back. Above me was an azure sky dotted with fluffy, marshmallow clouds. I turned my head and spotted the book lying closed on the ground a few metres away. I tried to move to retrieve it, but it took a few moments before I could roll onto my side and get to my knees.

When I finally managed to stand, I took in my surroundings with wide eyes. The sky may have been blue, but the ground was dirty charcoal. Lumps of gravel mixed with sand and dead grass. It stretched on, and on, nothing but barren wasteland no matter which way I turned. The only break in the landscape was where the horizon met the sky.

A lump of fear rose in my throat. Where was Elliot?

didn’t know where I was, and I was completely alone.

Facts about Angela Carlie

I write fiction. I work hard. I play often.

When I'm not pushing a mouse around at a desk job, which is boring, or writing, which is fun, I enjoy hanging out with my fourteen-year-old son and husband, reading, hiking, kayaking, traveling, and running.

Hawaii and Washington are my two favorite states.

I believe that if everyone ate a whole-food plant based diet, cancer cases would be a minimum, heart disease a thing of the past, and hunger something found in history books.

One of my favorite documentaries is Forks Over Knives.

I love hearing about people reading my books, so if you enjoyed one of my stories, please let me know by leaving a review on Amazon or Goodreads.

Thank you for spending time with my stories. We don't have much of it and I appreciate that you find my work worthy of your time.

Interview:

Hi everyone. In an attempt to help make readers aware of my new release, Jenny's Blue Velvet, I was asked to interview myself. This is something I never really thought about doing, but was up for the challenge. I asked myself, "If I was not me, what would I like to know about me?" There's only one question I can think of (which is unrelated to my book), so I went to the internet and asked Facebook for some questions. If all else fails, ask Facebook, right? Well, it worked! Thank you Sherry, Heather, Ron, Jen, Racheal, and Sharon for your contributions.

I give you myself interviewing me.

Myself: Where did the inspiration for Jenny's Blue Velvet come from?

Me: That's a very good question, Myself. I usually start out writing one book, and then it becomes something completely different. This was not necessarily the case for Jenny's Blue Velvet. I wrote a blog post in May exclaiming my excitementfor the idea for this new story. It spurred off a question I asked, "What if the 'if only' in life became reality?" You know the 'if only' statement, right? If only I can win the lottery... If only I can lose ten pounds... If only I didn't have to work in a cubicle anymore... etc. We all have them. Wishes and ideas on how our lives can be so much better.

This was the original inspiration for Jenny's Blue Velvet (taken from my own 'if only') and it's still a major part of the story, but it spun away into something much more interesting.

Myself: What's your favorite character in Jenny's Blue Velvet?

Me: Man, that's a tough one. Jenny has the characteristics of the average woman, like me, that I love. She's insecure and clumsy and lovable. Cassandra has everything the average woman wants, and then some we don'tMathilde, however, is a strong spirit. You don't want to mess with Mathilde. I love them all.

Myself: Angela, what makes you so awesome?

Me: OMG! hahahaha Well, I don't consider myself as awesome, but if someone else does, it's probably because of the wonderful lives I'm surrounded by. Including my incredible Facebookfriends. :)

Myself:  Do you see bits of yourself in your characters?

Me: Absolutely! They come from my imagination. They most definitely carry some of me with them.

Myself: Do you prefer writing in settings that are completely imaginary or do you base your settings in reality?

Me: Both. I enjoy taking reality and making it imaginary while keeping some of the reality intact.

Myself: Why the departure (or brief foray from) YA?

Me: I have several adult story ideas that I've been  holding onto for years. I just haven't explored publishing them yet. Jenny's Blue Velvet was one I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I wrote it, and now it's ready to share with the world. I still have YA stories to write too. It's all about the mood I'm in, I guess.

Myself: Goals? Accomplishments? Improvements?

Me: Oh, wow! They are ever changing. I recently accomplished a half marathon and a 200 mile relay race with a fabulous group of friends. That was pretty freaking awesome!

Myself: How long until you can write full time?

Me: That's what I want to know! Ha! I really don't have an answer to this question. Writing full time is a dream of mine thatI've been working toward for the last five and a half years. I headed down the indie author path two and a half years ago with the help of my friends and authors Megg Jensen, KarlyKirkpatrick, and GP Ching. It's been an amazing experience. Yes, it gets frustrating at times, but I know if I keep it up, someday I'll reach my goal. A lot of that also depends on the readers and how much they enjoy my stories. And marketing.Oy!

Myself: Are there any authors or books you recommend?

Me: Oh, yes! I am fortunate to know some very talented authors that I highly recommend. Anything by Stacey Wallace Benefiel, Lisa Nowak, Megg Jensen, G.P. ChingKarly Kirkpatrick,Chanda Hahn, and all the authors from the Pacific Northwest YA Authors group.

Thank you for taking the time to find out more about me and my story, Jenny's Blue Velvet.

Excerpt:

Kara Magari squinted back up the path she’d just climbed. The gazebo’s roof peeked through the trees, evidence of where she’d been only ten minutes before. Not bad. With her finger in the air, she traced the way she’d taken, starting at the lichgate and going down over each step in her head. Her finger hovered and came to a stop, though, when she examined the base of the hill.
Built into the rock was a marble door, shrouded with overhanging roots and dangling moss that clung to its frame like bangs. She rubbed her eyes, but the closed entryway was still there when she opened them again.
She brushed her hand along the door’s smooth stone. It was simple, with only a round stone knob and a small emblem carved into the rock at eye level. The symbol looked something like a four-leaf clover made out of crescent moons.
Kara’s fingers itched on the handle, but she hesitated.
The ground trembled with a sudden force that knocked her against the cliff. The breeze stopped, dissolving with a hiss into the hot summer sky. She scanned the valley. Several somethingscracked in the ground under her feet.
Thunder rumbled overhead. A dark cloud churned in the sky, and her heart fell into her stomach; there hadnt even been a single fluffy cloud up there ten minutes ago.
A blinding bolt of moss-colored lightning flashed, striking the ground nearby. The hairs on her arms stood on end. Heat coursed through her calves, and she caught her breath. Her ears rang.
WaitWas that lightning green?
The cliff trembled as a boom shattered the air. It began to rain. The heavy drops pelted her skin and clung to her hair as another rumble coursed along the far edge of the valley. She needed shelter, and the last place she would go in a lightning storm was up a hill.
She turned back and twisted the door’s handle, sighing with relief as it openedunlocked. Still, as wet as it was outside and as much as she wanted a safe place to wait out the rain, shelingered on the threshold to examine the room.
Mud covered everything from the floor to the ceiling. Since there weren’t any supports to hold the roof, she couldn’t figure out how the ten-by-ten dirt shelter hadn’t caved in yet. The air within was heavy, moist with the rot of dead leaves, and her only guiding light streamed in from behind her. Roots dangled from the ceiling like stalactites reaching for the floor. The wind picked up, howling as it pelted rain against her back.
Kara tested the ground with her sneaker. The dirt floor supported her weight, so she tip-toed into the room and left the door open. Rain fell in lingering drops on the threshold before it disappeared into the growing pools of mud. She stuck her hands in her pockets and watched the raging storm outside.
A flash of dark brown blurred past her.
She jumped. A tan flicker snaked along the roof, and clumps of soil fell in sheets. She glared at the ceiling, holding her breathas the settling dust rained onto her shoes.
It had almost looked like a root moving, but thatthat was crazy.
Another streak of motion raced down the opposite wall. It passed through a shaft of light, and Kara saw its pointed, wooden tip. Tiny veins sprouted from it like hairs, digging into the dirt so that it could travel.
It was a root moving.
A second spiny vine shot up from the floor and wrapped itself around her leg. It pulled. She tripped, falling into the first root as it snaked along the far wall. Dirt poured over her head, blinding her. The scent of decaying bark made her cough. The root tugged again, and she was yanked onto her hands and knees. It dragged her towards the center of the room. She reached for the knife strapped to her free ankle, the one Mom hadno! She couldn’t think of Mom. Not now.
A third root wrapped around her waist, and another grabbed her hand as she reached for the blade. The roots flipped her onto her back. With a bang, the door snapped shut. Her stomach churned. The floor disappeared. She fell, and the roots let go.
